Radical Middle politics attempts to put the civil back in civil society. We appreciate (and share) the passion of our brothers and sisters on the conservative Right and liberal Left to serve our country, planet, and fellow citizens. However, we believe that radical reform is best accomplished by respecting our opponents and listening to all sides of the issues – yet having the courage and creativity to search for better options.
If that sounds both fun and liberating — it is! Even better, you don’t have to become a martyr or a megalomaniac to succeed at Radical Middle politics. Instead, the goal is to become what author Mark Satin calls a player, a caring person who works within the system to help their peers embrace positive change. It exemplifies what is sometimes called transformational politics, where we as individuals seek to practice the same virtues – e.g., humility, justice, love – that we want to see in our democratic systems.
If that sounds impossibly idealistic — it is not! Radical Middle politics is intensely pragmatic, grounded on the latest research and understanding of politics, economics, and sociology. It is a growing movement that is attracting media coverage, research dollars, and even a few politicians. Perhaps most importantly, it is a productive approach that can handle everything from international conflicts to local school board meetings – and might even bring peace to your family dinner table.
